History

Franklin was created in 1885 as a company town of the Oregon Improvement Company. The Pacific Coast Coal Company took over the Oregon Improvement Co. in 1902.

Description

This image shows a miner holding a Davy Lamp and wearing a miner's cap with a lamp in front of the No. 1 Franklin Coal Mine. He is sitting on the corner of a cart. The cart has chains at the corners, which are attached to a cable and pulley system.
