James Strang was born in the United States, of Scottish descent, in 1850. He immigrated to Canada in 1894, and worked as a mine overman in Cumberland. He and his wife Christina lived at 2729 Maryport. On December 16th, 1904, James was fatally injured when his leg was severed by a moving coal car. He was buried in block 7-126 at the Cumberland cemetery. The inscription on his tombstone reads: "Having finished Life's Duty, he now sweetly rests".
