History
The Big Strike (1912-1914) saw many outbursts of violence between supporters of the strike and the workers. On the night of 12 August 1913 in Ladysmith and South Wellington, strikebreakers and mine managers' houses were vandalized. Their inhabitants were beaten or chased out of their houses and into the woods where they hid to escape the mob.
