History
In 1909, tragic explosions at the Carbonado Colliery in Morrissey, near Fernie, and at the Extension mine on Vancouver Island, shook the mining industry. As a result of these devastating events, the Coal Mine Regulation Act underwent an amendment in 1910. This modification mandated the presence of rescue equipment and trained personnel, whose expenses would be covered by the coal companies, to be available in all coal mines.
