Ah Sing was a Chinese miner working at the No. 6 mine in 1903. After a gas explosion occurred in shaft No. 6, Ah Sing went back to work at stall No. 11 and was killed by the afterdamp left over from the explosion.
Afterdamp is a gas high in carbon monoxide, which makes it toxic, occurring after explosions of methane gas. It remains a hazard in modern mines.
