James Thoburn worked as a loader at the No. 5 mine, loading coal into the cars. After securing permission to leave work early from his boss, James was struck by a trip of descending cars as he was leaving. The hoist had been too noisy for him to hear the trip approaching. He had lived at 2822 Maryport. James was buried in the Cumberland cemetery in block 4-36.
