John Joseph Kirkbride was working as a tracklayer, setting the rail tracks the coal cars travelled on, at the No. 5 mine. He was killed on the job on May 22nd, 1924. Around the time of the mid-1920s, fatal accidents in the Cumberland coal mines began to decrease as safety conditions improved, with only two recorded for the area in 1924. John was buried in the Cumberland cemetery in block I-75. The inscription on his grave reads: "In loving memory of JJ Kirkbride killed May 22 1924 At rest".
