John Whyte was born in Scotland in 1864. In 1889 he immigrated to Canada with his father, James Whyte, to work in the Cumberland coal mines. John worked as a weighman at the No. 6 mine, a job which involved checking the weight of the coal and ensuring the miners were paid accordingly. He was killed in the 1901 disaster on February 15th. He was married to Sarah (nee Farrell) Whyte. They lived at 2560 Dunsmuir Ave, which was located in Camp. John was buried in the Cumberland cemetery in block 3-147.
