Roland "Rolie" James was a rope runner at the no. 4 mine. On December 29th, 1897, shortly after Christmas, he was severely injured when he fell underneath some empty mine cars. Later the same evening, he died of his injuries. A newspaper article from the time describes Roland as having been an athlete and an active member of the Fire Brigade. He was buried in Sandwick Cemetery.
