Tan Chi (or Gee) was a Chinese rope runner working at the No. 6 mine. He would have been responsible for fastening and unfastening trip cables, and for accompanying the carts up and down the slopes. On February 15th, 1901, Tan and his entire shift were killed when a explosion tore through the mine. Unfortunately discrepancies in the recording of Chinese fatalities of the disaster have caused difficulties in identifying Chinese casualties, with names having been misspelled or mis-recorded.
