Cause of death: 1903 disaster

Chong Mah was a rope runner, fastening and unfastening trip cables at No. 6 mine, when disaster struck on July 15th, 1903. A brig broke, releasing explosive gas into the mine. When this gas ignited, the explosion killed 14 workers, including Chong Mah. All of the fatalities were Chinese, and the disaster received less public attention than previous ones where white workers had been killed.
