John D. Brugh was a chainman working in the No. 6 mine. As a chainman, he was part of the survey crew, working with the engineers and surveyors to inspect mines. He died of carbon monoxide poisoning while inspecting the mines, alongside four others. The gas, often a by-product of methane explosions in the mines, was undetected until it was too late.
