James Dunsmuir was the third child of Robert Dunsmuir, born in Fort Vancouver, Oregon Territory (now Washington), USA, on July 8th, 1851. After his father's death he and John Bryden (his brother-in-law) managed the Dunsmuir family coal business until 1910 when the company, R. Dunsmuir and Sons, was sold and became Canadian Collieries (Dunsmuir) Ltd.
James Dunsmuir served as British Columbia's 14th premier from 1900-1902.
