Joseph "Joe" Allison was a mule driver at the no. 6 mine one the day of the 1901 disaster, on February 15th. The initial explosion caused a raging fire within the mine, and a second explosion occurred soon after. When it became clear that the fire would not abate, a decision was made to flood the mine to put it out. Joe, along with the entire shift, were killed in the disaster. He was buried in Block 3-143 in the Cumberland cemetery.
Joe was the brother of George Allison, a miner who would go missing during a hunting expedition two years later, in 1903, in the mountains by Comox Lake.
