William C. Whitehorse was a fireboss at the No. 4 mine. On February 8th, 1923, he was working when he killed in the disastrous gas explosion that killed 33 workers. He was buried in the Cumberland cemetery in block 3-38A. The inscription on his grave reads: "Father in Thy gracious keeping leave me now Thy servant sleeping".
