William Waugh was born in Scotland on July 23rd, 1893. After immigrating to Canada he moved to Cumberland, where he worked as machinist's helper at the No. 5 mine. On May 15th, 1942, in the midst of the Second World War, a machine haulage post struck William in the nose. This seemingly non-fatal injury, however, caused his death days later, on May 18th, when a blood clot from the injury came loose and lodged in his lung, causing a fatal lung embolism. He was survived by his wife, Janet, and was buried in the Cumberland cemetery in block 4-77.
