Wong Foon Sien

Foon Sien was born in Guangdong, China between 1899 and 1902. He emigrated with his mother and brother to join his merchant father in Cumberland Chinatown. In 1910 Foon Sien graduated from the University of British Columbia with a degree in law, but was not allowed to practice as he was Chinese and not a citizen. Spent years as an advocate and lobbyist for Chinese Canadian rights. He was a key figure in the Chinese community's fight for equal rights in Canada. He died on July 31st, 1971 in Vancouver.
