History
The shackle is for connecting equipment to cables or chains. Part of the George Yates Collection. All of the item in this collection had been stored outside at the Village of Cumberland work yard for a number of years before coming to the Cumberland Museum, and being outside has caused some rust.
Description
The shackle is made from 7 cm. (2.5 inch) diameter round bar bent in a "U" shape, with the ends flattened and punched to take a shackle pin. The shackle pin is a 6 cm (2.25 inch) diameter bolt with a hexagonal head and threaded tip. The pin is held by a hexagonal nut. The tip of the pin has a hole for a cotter key or a Molly Hogan. The Molly Hogan is made from 1 cm (.25 inch) strand wire woven back on itself to form a loop.
