History
Boom winches were used to pull "swifter" logs across the log boom. Swifters are logs that lie between the outside boom logs and are used to keep the boom from spreading while it is being towed. Originally hand cranked but later motorized.
Part of the George Yates Collection. All of the items in this collection had been stored outside at the Village of Cumberland work yard for a number of years before coming to the Cumberland Museum, and being outside has caused some rust.
Description
The sides of the winch are heavy, triangular, steel plates with the winch drum mounted between them. The drum has a length of cable on it. There is a pawl on one side to keep the winch from unwinding. The drum is turned by a large gear wheel that meshes with the gear on the crank shaft. There is a second shaft at the back of the winch with two gears on it but it does not appear to do anything.
The base of the winch shows heavy corrosion with the rest covered in surface rust.
